I was watching a show the other day where one of those street vendors in New York City was scamming people with "Three Card Monty", you know the game but may not have heard the name before. It is the game where the dealer shuffles three cards on a table quickly and you bet and have to guess where the ace is. He is so fast and so skilled he wins most of the time and when he does not win he pressures you to invest your winnings to play again. The game could be played with a walnut shell and a pebble ("Shell Game") or three cups and a ball.

Why did this interest me? Because it's sort of what most dealers will try to do to you. You see, the deal on your car is not just the raw price that you pay on the vehicle. There is also the financing, the trade-in value you are getting and the price of any warranty or accessories you desire to get.

The dealer can shuffle any one of these things around to make you think you are getting a great deal. He can sell you the car for $1,000 less if you pay $1,000 more than the extended warranty is worth. He can sell you the car for $1,000 less if he charges you $1,000 more in interest than you should pay. He can sell you the car for $1,000 less if he gives you $1,000 less for your trade in.

You need to compare the whole deal. I can't tell you how many times we have seen customers "snookered" into thinking they got a great deal from another dealer but actually paid more than our price because they paid $2,500 for an extended warranty that should have cost $750.
