It’s a little known fact that all dealers get their cars and trucks from the manufacturer for the same price. It is written right into the NY State franchise law. So what does this mean?
It means that there are NO volume discounts and the dealer who tries to make you think so is out and out lying! (Hard to believe a dealer would lie isn’t it?) All those guys jumping up and down on TV that are telling you how big they are should only be talking about the girth of their belly because when it comes to making you a better deal, being bigger means nothing at all. We all buy our cars and trucks for the same price. They do not buy them for less.
The only way to get a better deal is to get a better deal. Of course you need to compare price but do not forget the raw price of the vehicle is only one part of the equation. A dealer can quote you a price that sounds attractive to you then pick your pocket when it comes to financing and your trade-in value. He can quote a customer $500 less for the car and then slam a customer $3,000 on the financing and lots of people will never notice. He can quote you $500 less for the car yet undervalue your trade by $1,000 and lots of people will not notice.
He may require that you buy electronic rustproofing to get his price. In my opinion electronic rustproofing is worthless yet a dealer will try to sell it to you for $1,000 and make a $900 profit by doing so.
Throw in too the fact that you may need at some point in time to get your vehicle repaired so you need to factor in the competency of the dealer’s repair shop. I will give you a little “sell” here. At Genesee Valley Chrysler Dodge Jeep and Ram our shop is open from 7am to 8pm six days a week, even Saturday. Coincidentally, at Genesee Valley Ford, our shop is open from 7am to 8pm six days a week, even Saturday !
In conclusion, wherever you buy a car, know all you can and don’t let a dealer scam you! Compare price, financing, trade-in and the competency of the dealer’s shop!
